    Now that the first filing season is over, and with new tax rules in place, what did we learn? Our expert panelists review the highlights of tax reform and identify what provisions have the largest impact on mortgage lending. Areas which they lend clarification to include the new pass-through deduction, limitation on business interest deduction, and changes to standard and itemized deductions.

    Jeff Spiegel’s distinguished career as a Certified Public Accountant has included positions with Peat Marwick and Deloitte & Touche, two of the largest accounting firms in the world. He went on to establish his own firm in 1990 to better meet the needs of his clients.

    Jeff’s experience covers the full range of tax, accounting, audit, and consulting services. His professional style is to maintain a high-level of visibility and interaction with his clients throughout the year to stay abreast of developments within their companies that affect their financial picture.

    Throughout his career, Jeff has specialized in providing services for individuals and small businesses in a wide variety of industries including financial services, real estate, investment partnerships, professional service firms and e-commerce. Jeff has published articles on various tax topics and business practices and is a frequent speaker on various tax, accounting, and business topics.

    He is actively involved in professional organizations related to specific industries such as the Mortgage Bankers Association, California Mortgage Bankers Association, and the California Mortgage Association.

    Jeff is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the California Society of CPAs. He received his BS degree from the University of Arizona and is a Certified Public Accountant in the states of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Oregon, Nevada, Texas, Washington, and Washington DC. In his spare time, Jeff likes to travel and exercise. He loves sporting events and is an avid Golden State Warrior fan – you’ll find him at almost every game. He also likes to hike and spend time with his colleagues and friends.

    Jared Frost, AMP, Partner, Richey May & Co., LLP

    Jared Frost is Partner in Charge of Richey May’s Mortgage Banking Tax Practice. He started with Richey May in 2009 and became a Tax Partner in 2013. Jared has managed relationships with clients in various industries, including mortgage banking, real estate, wholesale, retail and professional services. He currently specializes in providing tax compliance and consulting services to privately held mortgage banking companies throughout the country. He helps clients understand the tax opportunities and consequences that arise from their business decisions. Jared also plays a key role internally at the firm, leading the Mortgage Banking Tax Practice, reviewing the work of staff and managers and assisting with recruiting, practice development, and staff mentoring and evaluations. Previously, Jared worked at KPMG, LLP managing client relationships and reviewing staff work.

    Jared grew up in Los Angeles where he was inspired to pursue a career in accounting by his father, who was also an accountant. Jared attributes his success to a strong work ethic and motivation to acquire knowledge. He now resides in Parker, Colorado with his wife, Holly, and their seven children. The Frost family is particularly fond of the Parker community due to the type of lifestyle it permits. While away from the office, Jared enjoys sports, movies and spending time with family and friends.

    Brad Marckx, Partner, BKM Sowan Horan

    Brad started his career approximately 20 years ago working as a revenue agent with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The background with the IRS and a Masters Degree in Taxation (MT) from University of Denver provides a solid foundation in helping businesses, both private and public. Brad’s area of concentration include federal and state tax planning and compliance , ASC 740, Accounting for income taxes (including documentation of uncertain positions), entity choice, and strategic plans and forecasts.

    Brad’s clients benefit from tax strategies that work with the short and long range business objectives. Listening to individuals and management teams’ objectives and educating on the tax options provides a collaborative approach. This can involve merger and acquisitions planning in partnership and corporations, Oil and Gas services and E&P, Section 263A capitalization analysis, or other complex situations.

    Brad enjoys the collaboration, the foundation of BKM Sowan Horan, that comes from working with dedicated professionals and managing a diverse group of clients.
