The past year has provided new and unexpected liquidity challenges in the mortgage industry, particularly for servicers that have been charged with implementing forbearance and other loss mitigation options for borrowers impacted by the pandemic. It is unsurprising, therefore, that regulators, the GSEs, investors, and analysts have placed great scrutiny on liquidity – particularly with respect to IMBs. In this session, practitioners share their expert analysis of the lessons learned from the pandemic, the challenges that remain, reactions from policymakers, and steps that IMBs and other market participants can take to enhance their liquidity profiles.

    Speaker(s)

Laura Brandao, President, American Financial Resources

As an industry resource of knowledge, positivity and passion, Laura Brandao radiates energy for bringing families home.

Launching the wholesale channel for American Financial Resources in 2007 as Director of Operations, Laura went on to become an AFR partner, followed by Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer, and now serves the company as President.

Laura is the magnetic leader who launched a networking organization for women in the mortgage industry while cementing AFR as one of the nation’s leading specialty lenders, including Manufactured Home and Renovation programs. A skilled executive, Laura seamlessly rolls out new products based on market demand. And, as a coveted speaker, moderator and panelist, Laura is a well-regarded champion for loan originators, builders and other industry partners.

This year alone, Laura has been integral to the development and launch of several mortgage industry initiatives, beyond the business of lending. Laura was named Chair of the National Association of Minority Mortgage Bankers of America’s (NAMMBA) Visionary program, recruiting corporate partners for Mission 2025, launched to introduce, develop, and connect college talent to the industry. She also serves as the effervescent leader who spearheaded the launch of the Women’s Mortgage Network (WMN) for the Association of Independent Mortgage Experts (AIME). Fifty women from various positions in the industry were invited to convene for the launch event in March, and WMN has blossomed to engage over 1800 members in just six months. Laura was also spearheading the first ever women’s event for MBA-NJ, coordinating panelists and event promotion, before the event was postponed due to social distancing orders. At the onset of our collective quarantine, Laura launched a “Survive & Thrive” group on Facebook, providing a positive platform to spotlight brokers and other industry professionals, and give people a place to share motivation and express themselves. That weekly mortgage community initiative has since transitioned to “Thrive Thursdays” and is still going strong.

At AFR, Laura has been the driving force catapulting AFR Wholesale to the top of Manufactured Home, One-Time Close and Renovation lending. Growing AFR into a national leader in specialized programs, she stays connected to the clients and families she serves, allowing her to develop new products based on market demand, including VA renovation, USDA repair escrow, and a full suite of One-Time Close Construction-to-Permanent programs. Under her leadership, AFR remains on the cutting edge of technology with mobile-friendly applications that cohesively integrate AFR with the borrower, realtor and loan originator.

Laura has been featured as one of “The 10 Most Influential Businesswomen to Follow in 2020” and among “The 20 Most Successful Businesswomen to Watch, 2020” by Insights Success magazine.
