    Bob  is a senior finance executive and corporate officer with a 33-year career in the mortgage sector. He has directed all aspects of lending activities, including marketing, sales, operations, secondary marketing, loan servicing and default management. He has also served as a mortgage underwriting expert testifying on many large, high-profile cases. Prior to joining MBA, Broeksmit served as President and Chief Operating Officer with Treliant, heading the firm’s mortgage litigation support practice. Before Treliant, Broeksmit held senior leadership positions in the mortgage business, including 14 years with Chevy Chase Bank (including after its purchase by Capital One). He also was Vice President at Prudential Home Mortgage for seven years. He has overseen annual originations of $9 billion, a balance sheet of $10 billion in residential mortgage and a servicing portfolio of $20 billion. He is past Chairman of MBA’s Residential Board of Governors and a member of its Board of Directors.

    Brian Stoffers, CMB, 2020 MBA Chairman, Global President, Debt & Structured Finance CBRE

    Brian Stoffers, CMB is the Chairman of the MBA and Global President, Debt & Structured Finance at CBRE, a Fortune 500 and S&P 500 company headquartered in Los Angeles, and the world’s largest commercial real estate services and investment firm. Stoffers has extensive experience in the origination, structuring, placement, closing and servicing of commercial real estate debt for life insurance companies, pension funds, banks, debt funds and loans, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, FHA and Wall Street sources. An active MBA member for more than 25 years, Stoffers has served in several leadership positions within the association, including immediate past chairman of MBA’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. He also serves on MBA’s Executive Committee and Audit Committees. Stoffers previously served on the Commercial Real Estate/Multifamily Finance Board of Governors (COMBOG), and is the former Chairman of the Task Force on GSE Reform and Capital Markets Committee.

    Michael Stevens, Senior Executive Vice President, Conference of State Bank Supervisors

    Mike is the Senior Executive Vice President at the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS).   He is responsible for leading the organization’s government relations, communications, and professional development functions.  Mike also serves as a deputy to the state banking member of the Financial Stability Oversight Council.  Prior to his appointment in September 2011, Mike served as the Senior Vice President for Regulatory Policy, representing the state banking system in the development of policy in the areas of financial stability, prudential supervision, and consumer protection.  He joined CSBS in 1999 to work in all facets of CSBS’s Professional Development Division.   Mike is a frequent instructor and speaker on banking policy, examinations, and financial analysis.   Mike serves on the faculty of the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado.  He also serves on the advisory board of the Center for Financial Services at the University of Utah.  He began his regulatory career as a bank examiner for the Iowa Division of Banking, where he served 11 year.

    The 2019 Financial Services Oversight Council annual report cited the growing market share of independent mortgage banks as a potential emerging risk.  While media reports have focused on how regulators might "manage market share down," we have asked this panel of experts  to break out of the bank/nonbank dichotomy to discuss how to make  mortgage origination and servicing a more attractive and resilient market for any institution that wants to devote capital to supporting sustainable homeownership.

    Bill Cosgrove, served as the 2015 Chairman of the Mortgage Bankers Association. Bill Cosgrove is the Owner and CEO of Union Home Mortgage Corp. headquartered in Strongsville, Ohio in the Greater Cleveland area. His mortgage banking career began in 1986 as a residential loan officer. In 1994 Mr. Cosgrove joined Union National Mortgage Co. and in 1998 was named President. Mr. Cosgrove purchased and became 100% stockholder of the company in 1999. In 2010.The name of the company was changed to Union Home Mortgage Corp. In 2007 Bill served as president of the Ohio MBA and in 2015 was the Chairman of the national Mortgage Bankers Association, becoming the first person from Ohio to serve the industry in both capacities. Previously, he served as chairman of MBA’s MORPAC Committee, MBA Board of Governors, and been a long-time member of the MBA Board of Directors. Awards include the distinguished Hoddup Award for his many contributions to the Ohio Mortgage Bankers Association, The National Mortgage Bankers Associations Burton C. Wood, National Legislative Service Award and the prestigious Andrew Woodward Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed on an individual member of MBA. Mr. Cosgrove has testified on behalf of the industry before Congress, House Financial Services and Senate Banking Committees and the Ohio House of Representatives. He has been interviewed by national publications, The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, numerous trade publications, national and local news networks.

    Pete Mills, Senior Vice President, Residential Policy & Member Engagement, Mortgage Bankers Association

    Pete Mills is Senior Vice President of Residential Policy and Member Engagement at the MBA. He leads MBA's residential policy team and state and local advocacy program, and directs MBA's residential member engagement efforts across the MBA value platform. Mills is an experienced financial services industry executive with more than 30 years of expertise in public affairs, government relations, public policy and research, all in the housing and mortgage finance arena. Prior to joining MBA, he served as Managing Director and co-founder of the Community Mortgage Banking Project, a public policy organization that represented the interests of companies and coalitions involved in the housing and mortgage finance industries.  During his career, Mills led corporate public affairs for Countrywide Financial, managed trade association policy advocacy for the California Mortgage Bankers Association and the California Association of Realtors, and conducted housing policy research at the Federal Reserve Board.

     

    Michael (Mike) Dunlap, President and COO, Merchants Capital Corp.

    Michael (Mike) Dunlap serves as President and CEO of Merchants Bank of Indiana, President and COO of Merchants Bancorp, and Chairman of Merchants Capital Corp. He joined Merchants Bank as Senior Vice President of Mortgage Banking in 2009 and became a member of the Board of Directors in 2014. He was primarily responsible for establishing the warehouse lending platform and Merchants Mortgage. He has over 30 years of mortgage banking experience. Prior to joining the Bank, he served as the Chief Financial Officer of National City Mortgage, now a part of PNC. Dunlap held similar finance positions at Bank One, now JPMorgan Chase and Waterfield Mortgage. He started his career as a Certified Public Accountant with KPMG.

    Michael Fratantoni is MBA's Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of Research and Industry Technology. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing MBA's industry surveys, benchmarking studies, economic and mortgage originations forecasts, industry technology efforts, and policy development research for both single-family and commercial/multifamily markets. Additionally, Fratantoni is president and member of the Board of Directors of MISMO and serves on the CSP's Industry Advisory Group and the membership committee of MERS.  Prior to joining MBA, Fratantoni worked in the industry in risk management and senior economist roles at Washington Mutual and Fannie Mae.  He received a Ph.D. in economics from Johns Hopkins University and a B.A. in economics from The College of William and Mary, and has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Washington, and Johns Hopkins, George Washington, and Georgetown Universities.

    Frank Nothaft, Ph.D, Executive Chief Economist, CoreLogic

    Dr. Frank Nothaft is chief economist for CoreLogic, America’s largest provider of advanced property and ownership information, analytics and data-enabled services. He leads the economics team responsible for analysis, commentary and forecasting in global real estate, insurance and mortgage markets.  Before joining CoreLogic, Frank served in a variety of leadership positions at Freddie Mac including Vice president and Chief Economist. Prior to Freddie Mac, Frank was an economist with the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in the mortgage and consumer finance section and served as assistant to Governor Henry C. Wallich.  Frank received the National Association for Business Economics (NABE) Outlook Award as recognition for having the most accurate macroeconomic forecast for 2018 and is a NABE Certified Business Economist.  Frank graduated from New York University with a B.A. in mathematics and computer science and holds a Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University.

    Bill Killmer is Senior Vice President for Legislative and Political Affairs at the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA). A veteran of over twenty five years in the housing arena, Bill is responsible for managing the real estate finance industry's legislative, grassroots, and political fundraising activities, in close coordination with the MBA member leadership and its public policy and lobbying teams. He directs MBA's outreach to Congress, and is a regular guest speaker on the intersection of politics, policy, and industry issues.  Previously named one of CEO Update's trade association Top Lobbyists, Killmer joined MBA in July 2010, after nearly twenty years in the policy space at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).  During his NAHB tenure, Killmer served as the association's Chief Lobbyist and, more recently, as Executive Vice President for Advocacy, managing all aspects of the group's public policy outreach.  He previously served as a Senior Legislative Officer for Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs at the U.S. Department of Labor during the George H.W. Bush administration.

    Kurt Pfotenhauer, Vice Chairman, First American Title Insurance Company

    Kurt Pfotenhauer is Vice Chairman of First American Financial Corp (NYSE: FAF), a family of over 100 companies whose core business lines include title insurance, settlement services, property data, home warranty products, property and casualty insurance as well as banking, trust and wealth management services.  Reporting directly to the CEO, Kurt’s responsibilities include managing the company’s executive level relationships with the company’s largest customers, the U.S. Congress and executive branch.  He also leads an innovation effort within corporation to automate title decisioning using artificial intelligence.  Prior to joining First American, Kurt served as chief executive officer of the Washington, D.C.-based American Land Title Association (ALTA).  Prior to joining ALTA, Kurt served as senior vice president of government affairs for the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), where he was twice named one of Washington, D.C.’s top lobbyists. He previously served as chief of staff for Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Rep. Denny Smith (R-OR), and was vice president of public affairs for United Parcel Service.  Kurt currently serves on the MBA's Board of Directors, Board of Directors of the Opens Doors Foundation, and sits on the Housing Policy Council's executive committee. He previously chaired the Board of Directors of MERS Corp and is a past chair of the MBA’s political action committee (MORPAC) and presently chairs the Board of Directors of the Mortgage Industry Standards Maintenance Organization (MISMO).

    Quincy Enoch, Strategist and Advocate, Invariant

    Strategist and advocate Quincy Enoch works across Invariant’s clients, leveraging more than a decade of policy expertise and political savvy.  He brings a wide range of experience with a proven track record as a trade association’s lead Democratic lobbyist.  Quincy is a “Democratic whisperer” to House Democrats on key committees and inside the Congressional Black Caucus, and he is a pro at designing and implementing robust shoe-leather lobbying efforts.  Quincy joined Invariant from the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC), where he was the lead Democrat designing and implementing strategies on behalf of the association’s membership.  His policy focus included insurance, automated vehicles, drones, and consumer financial protection.  Quincy also led the Democratic efforts of NAMICPAC, coordinating its engagement and political giving.  Before NAMIC, Quincy rose through the ranks at the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) from legislative and PAC coordinator to senior associate director of legislative affairs and military liaison.  Quincy is a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve and served in Iraq.

    Susan Stewart is the Chairman-Elect of MBA and Chief Executive Officer of SWBC Mortgage, a full-service mortgage banking firm headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.  Beginning with just 3 employees, Stewart has grown the company to over 615 individuals operating in 39 states with annual sales in excess of $3 billion and a servicing portfolio exceeding $9 billion.  Additionally, she has guided the company through multiple acquisitions and the approval process to become an approved seller/servicer for both FNMA and FHLMC, and an approved GNMA issuer.  She is currently the  Chair of MBA’s Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Committee, serves on  MBA’s Consumer Affairs Advisory Council and is past Vice Chair of the MBA’s Residential Board of Governors (RESBOG).     Jerome (Jerry) Selitto, President, Better.com

    Jerry Selitto currently serves as the President of Better.com.  Jerry is a leader in the financial services industry, with a proven track record as an innovator and change agent. His breadth of experience in financial services includes serving as CEO of the nation’s 4th largest retail mortgage lender; bank founder and president; one of the co-founders of a mortgage insurance company; and head of structured finance at leading Wall Street firms.  Jerry led a successful turnaround of PHH Corporation (NYSE: PHH), achieving record Core earnings, and doubled market share while reducing annual operating expenses by $90 million. His prior start-up experience was a co-founder of Amerin Guaranty. Amerin, through the introduction of innovative products that became staples of a long-established industry, achieved a 9.5% market share and completed a successful IPO in its first three years of operations. Amerin merged with CMAC mortgage insurance to create Radian Guaranty, one of the Top 3 mortgage insurers in America (NYSE: RDN).  He continued his record of innovation as the founder and CEO of DeepGreen Financial, a highly successful online national federal savings bank and home equity lender. His team developed the first fully automated home equity origination and servicing platform. The firm grew to a $500 million institution in less than six months with an innovative Certificate of Deposit program and originated over $4.5 billion in high quality home equity loans in its first four years of operation. DeepGreen was sold to Lightyear Capital.

    Kristy Fercho, 2020 MBA Vice Chairman and President of Mortgage, Flagstar Bank, FSB

    Kristy Fercho joined Flagstar Bank in 2017 as executive vice president and president of Mortgage. In this capacity, she is responsible for the direction and oversight of all aspects of mortgage and secondary marketing for Flagstar and for the continued expansion of Flagstar’s mortgage business. Flagstar is the nation’s fifth largest bank mortgage originator.  Prior to Flagstar, Fercho spent 15 years with Fannie Mae, ultimately serving as senior vice president, customer delivery executive, responsible for the end-to-end strategy and business performance of all single-family customers in the western United States, representing an acquisition volume of over $300 billion. Her experience in the mortgage industry is broad and deep, covering mortgage originations, fulfillment, risk management, secondary marketing, servicing, technology initiatives, and regulation.  Prior to Fannie Mae, she worked for eight years at PepsiCo, reaching the level of director of Human Resources for several corporate functions worldwide. Fercho began her career at Baxter Healthcare in sales, operations, and HR positions.  Fercho serves on the board of directors of the Mortgage Bankers Association and the Detroit Zoological Society. MReport honored her as one of the Top Women in Housing, Diversity Journal listed her among its Women Worth Watching, National Mortgage Professional Magazine named her to its list of Most Powerful Women, and the Michigan Chronicle selected her for its Women of Excellence recognition.

    Eddy Perez, CMB, is President of Equity Prime Mortgage based in Atlanta, Georgia where he oversees sales finance, marketing and business development. As co-founder of Equity Prime Mortgage, recognized as part of the Inc. 5000, he has excelled within the mortgage industry being named one of the nation’s top mortgage bankers, recognized in National Mortgage Professionals Magazine’s “40 Most Influential Mortgage Professionals under 40.” Throughout his distinguished career he has held multiple executive-level positions. Prior to co-founding Equity Prime Mortgage, in 2008, he operated the top producing office for Global Mortgage, Inc. He holds the prestigious Certified Mortgage Banker (CMB) designation which he earned in October 2014. Perez is the chairman of the MORPAC committee, panelist for MBA future leaders program, holds a seat on the Board of Directors with the MBA and now co-chair of the new MBA affordable housing council.

    Kristin A. Messerli, Chief Executive Officer, Cultural Outreach Solutions

    Kristin Messerli is a national speaker and founder of Cultural Outreach, helping businesses better reach and serve next gen consumers and underserved markets. After starting her business in 2013, she has worked with over 50 companies of all sizes across the U.S. and has developed three arms of her business, including cause-driven marketing and PR, employee diversity training and multilingual marketing content. Kristin has spoken at over 100 conferences, including the Mortgage Bankers Association, the American Bar Association, and Harvard Business School. Kristin is also the Managing Editor for Mortgage Women Magazine and sits on the MBA's Diversity and Inclusion Committee. She co-authored the MBA's Compliance Toolkit for Section 342 and is published in numerous publications on the topic of diversity in housing.  Kristin holds over 13 years of experience working in multicultural business and social work. Prior to starting her business, Kristin was a social worker and community educator in the latino immigrant community. She also led teams of volunteers locally and abroad to develop sustainable business practices, and she has consulted for multinational social enterprises with the Center for Creation of Economic Wealth (CCEW). Kristin was trained by former McKinsey consultants at the University of Oklahoma, where she earned her Master of Public Administration.

    Antoine M. Thompson, National Executive Director, National Association of Real Estate Brokers

    Antoine M. Thompson is the Executive Director of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) the largest organization of African-American real estate professionals in the United States.  He is a partner with Creative PMO Solutions a consulting firm that focuses on diversity, inclusion and advocacy work.  He is also a licensed real estate agent with Howard Hanna. Antoine is a staunch champion of fair-housing and community re-investment by local and national financial institutions. He was elected to the New York State Senate in 2004 and 2008 and served as the Senate Deputy Majority Whip and Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Environmental Conversation and Co-Chair of the Senate Minority and Woman Business Enterprise Task Force.  In 2019, Antoine was ranked on the Swanepoel Power 200 list ranking of the most influential and powerful leaders and executives in the residential real estate brokerage industry.

    Sean Hoar is a partner in the Portland office of Lewis Brisbois and chair of the Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice. Sean has extensive experience managing responses to digital crises and effectively marshalling resources to contain and remediate information security incidents. He served as the lead cyber attorney for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Oregon where he was the point of contact for the FBI, Secret Service, and Homeland Security in system intrusions and other digital crime emergencies.     This evening’s dinner features an interview with Peggy Noonan, widely admired columnist for The Wall Street Journal, and best-selling author of nice books on American politics, history and culture, including her most recent release, The Time of Our Lives. Through humorous anecdotes and political insight, Noonan shares her perspective on Washington today, as well as her experience as a journalist and one of the country’s premier presidential speech writers.

    Peggy Noonan is a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for the Wall Street Journal, where her weekly column, Declarations, has run since 2000. She is also the bestselling author of nine books on American politics, history and culture, including the bestsellers What I Saw at the Revolution, and When Character Was King. She is one of ten historians and writers who contributed essays on the American presidency for the book, Character Above All. In her most recent release, The Time of Our Lives, Peggy chronicles her career in journalism, the Reagan White House, and the political arena.  On April 10, 2017, Noonan received the Pulitzer Prize for Political Commentary for her coverage of the 2016 Presidential Election.  In 2008 the National Journal dubbed Noonan’s political column indispensable to an understanding of the presidential year, and Forbes Magazine called her column “principled, perceptive, persuasive, and patriotic.” Noonan’s essays have appeared in TIMENewsweekThe Washington Post and other publications, and she provides frequent political commentary on television.  Noonan was a special assistant and speechwriter for president Ronald Reagan.  In 2010 she was given the Award for Media Excellence by the living recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor; the following year she was chosen as Columnist of the Year by The Week. In November 2016 she was named one of the city’s Literary Lions by the New York Public Library. She has been a fellow at Harvard University’s Institute of Politics, and has taught in the history department at Yale University.  Before entering the Reagan White House, Noonan was a producer and writer at CBS News in New York, and an adjunct professor of Journalism at New York University.  She was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up there, in Massapequa Park, Long Island, and in Rutherford, New Jersey.  She is a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford.  She lives in New York City.

    Marcia Davies is Chief Operating Officer for the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA).  As COO, Marcia is responsible for ensuring cross-organizational alignment and facilitating the implementation of strategic initiatives, as well as maintaining oversight of key organizational priorities. She is also the lead strategist for MBA's external activities, providing leadership, guidance and overall management to the public affairs and marketing divisions. In addition, Marcia provides strategic direction and management of MBA's Conferences, Membership, Education, Information Technology and Office Services divisions. She also provides management oversight to and is a Board member of MBA's Opens Doors Foundation.  Previously, Marcia worked at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), as Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Housing and Federal Housing Commissioner. She directed HUD's industry relations program to strengthen relationships, garner support, streamline communications and resolve policy and regulatory issues. Before joining HUD, Marcia spent 21 years at Freddie Mac, where she held a variety of officer positions in communications, customer outreach, marketing, servicer relations and policy.  Marcia is the founder of mPower - MBA Promoting Opportunities for Women to Extend their Reach - MBA's networking platform for women in the real estate finance industry.
