    Breakout Session

    FHA insurance is a critical program for constructing, rehabilitating, and stabilizing affordable and workforce multifamily rental housing. Our featured HUD speaker and FHA lender leadership discuss the public-private partnership between the industry and FHA, focusing on the current administration’s policy goals, and how they align with industry trends and are shaping the agency’s focus and regulatory reform initiatives. The panel will also discuss key issues in multifamily lending, and how FHA programs will support workforce and affordable housing in the coming year.

    Kenneth W. Buchanan, SVP & Director of FHA Underwriting, Walker & Dunlop, LLC

    Ken Buchanan, senior vice president and director of FHA Underwriting for Walker & Dunlop, has been underwriting FHA loans since 2004 and is a HUD approved Chief Underwriter for the multifamily and healthcare programs.  As director of FHA Underwriting, Mr. Buchanan manages a team of over 30 underwriting and closing staff, and is responsible for managing the FHA underwriting platform, including coordinating the underwriting process from initial loan screening to underwriting, rate lock, and closing.  Since 2013, Mr. Buchanan successfully managed an FHA underwriting pipeline that resulted in over 420 closed loans in excess of $4.2 billion.  Beyond the company, Mr. Buchanan serves on the Mortgage Bankers Association’s Multifamily Steering Committee, chairs the FHA Chief Underwriter Forum, and is President of the Eastern Lenders Association Board.  In addition, Mr. Buchanan is frequently invited to participate as a speaker at FHA related conferences and seminars relating to HUD policy for both multifamily and healthcare topics.  Mr. Buchanan is also a licensed real estate appraiser with over eight years’ experience, performing appraisals and market studies on a nationwide basis, specifically in the healthcare and senior housing industries.  Mr. Buchanan earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Finance from the University of Delaware.

    Dana Wade, General Deputy Assistant Secretary and Acting FHA Commissioner, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

    Dana Wade serves as the Office of Housing’s General Deputy Assistant Secretary.  In that role, Dana oversees the approximately 2500 employees in the Office of Housing, both in Headquarters and the field.  She has lead responsibility for carrying out Housing’s mission of providing affordable housing opportunities for moderate and low-income households.

    Dana has broad knowledge and experience in financial and housing policy issues, having served as the Deputy Staff Director of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs and as Republican Deputy Staff Director of the Senate Committee on Appropriations.  With her background, Dana is well positioned to lead the work of Housing.  She has a keen understanding of how banking and housing policy impact the affordability of affordable housing, taxpayer commitments, and by extension our neighborhoods and communities.

    Prior to her service in the Senate, Dana was the financial markets budget analyst for Rep. Paul Ryan on the House Budget Committee.  She was also a policy adviser to Senator John McCain during the 2008 presidential race and has worked for the U.S. Options Clearing Corporation and Accenture. Dana graduated from Georgetown University with a BA in economics and earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

    Daniel J. Sullivan, Acting Director, Multifamily Production, Federal Housing Administration, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

    Dan Sullivan is the Acting Director of FHA Multifamily Production in HUD Headquarters.  Prior to working at HUD Headquarters, he worked from 2002 to 2009 as the Chief FHA Underwriter for Reilly Mortgage, and then Wells Fargo Multifamily Capital. Mr. Sullivan started his career in multifamily in the Seattle HUD Office as a Multifamily Housing Representative (1988-1996), and then worked in HUD Headquarters on the Preservation, and Mark-to-Market Programs (1997-2002).   He spent 6 years in the US Navy, and graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Mathematics.
