    Breakout Session

    Private debt funds and other non-traditional sources of CRE capital have become established parts of CRE finance, sometimes with the backing of traditional financial institutions. Panelists discuss private debt funds, how they have evolved and matured as a source of CRE capital, and what impacts they may have on the CRE finance landscape going forward.

    Greta Guggenheim, Chief Executive Officer/Partner, TPG Real Estate Finance Trust

    Greta Guggenheim is Chief Executive Officer and President of TPG Real Estate Finance Trust (“TRT”) and a Firm Partner of TPG.  TRT is a NYSE listed commercial mortgage REIT (ticker TRTX) that originates commercial real estate mortgage loans in major markets throughout the U.S.  Previously, Ms. Guggenheim was Co‐Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Ladder Capital.  Ms. Guggenheim’s prior experience includes positions at Dillon Read Capital Management, UBS, Bear Stearns and Credit Suisse.  Ms. Guggenheim serves on the ULI Board of Trustees, Board of Governors of CREFC as well as several charitable foundations.  Ms. Guggenheim has a MBA from the Wharton School and a BA from Swarthmore College.

    Jack M. Cohen, CMB, Chief Executive Officer, Darkknight Ventures, LLC

    Education

    Cohen holds both a M.S. in Construction Management and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Stanford University. In addition, Mr. Cohen holds a B.A. from Claremont Men’s College Cohen recently sat on the Board of Trustees of Pitzer College; has taught classes at the Claremont Colleges and Northwestern, and is an active leader and member of several industry trade associations where he also is often a speaker, moderator, trainer, and keynote.

    Experience

    Cohen is currently the CEO of Darkknight Ventures, LLC, which is an advisory and investment firm focused on accelerating the success of entrepreneurial operating entities. We help firms grow more value, faster, while having the most fun. Cohen was most recently CEO at Shirlaws Group, headquartered in London, where he focused on the funding growth and exit services for SME’s across the globe. My Cohen remains a global partner in the firm. In Mr. Cohen’s growing venture capital activities, investments include: a college test prep company, an emerging manager in a Mezzanine space and a manufacturer of trailers for recreation vehicles. Mr. Cohen sits on the boards of American Hauler, Ascot, Hillcrest, and Academic Approach. Cohen began his career with Cohen Financial in 1981 as a loan originator before taking the lead of the firm as CEO, a title he held for twenty-five years. Mr. Cohen has essentially been the Chief Strategy Officer, leader, manager and producer. During Mr. Cohen’s 34 years at Cohen Financial, offices, as well as lines of businesses were created, grown, closed and even sold. Cohen recapitalized the firm six times between 1998 and 2013.

    Cohen thru the years has been an active member and association President of Chartered Realty Investor and Commercial Real Estate Finance Council (“CREFC”).  He sits on the boards of CREFC, Commercial Real Estate Finance/Multifamily Board of Governors (“COMBOG”) and has sat on the big board at Mortgage Bankers Association (“MBA”)  He is active in Urban Land Institute and is the past chair of the IOPC Silver Council   Cohen has been a member of Young Presidents Organization (“YPO”) / World President’s Organization (“WPO”) since 1992 and is a past Chapter YPO Chair (Chicago)  

    Honors and Awards  

    Mortgage Banker’s Association COMBOG Award Given in Recognition of Borrower Satisfaction Efforts CREFC Founder’s Award Winner in recognition of lifetime contributions to the commercial real estate securitization industry.

    Jimmy Yung, Managing Director, Blackstone

    Jimmy Yung is a Managing Director in Blackstone Real Estate Debt Strategies based in Los Angeles and oversees West Coast debt investments. Before joining Blackstone, Mr. Yung was Head of Originations and member of the Investment Committee for TPG Real Estate Finance Trust. Previously, he was Head of Originations for Deutsche Bank’s US Commercial Real Estate Special Situations business focused on principal high yield finance and distressed debt acquisitions. Mr. Yung received a BA from Georgetown University.

    Tom MacManus, President, Strategic Accounts, A10 Capital

    Tom has over 35 years of experience in commercial real estate finance which includes banking, mortgage banking, real estate investment banking and related capital markets.

    From 2003-2006 Tom served as President of GMAC Commerical Mortgage Corp. and CEO of its North American Operations where he managed seven lending platforms and a mortgage banking group comprising a $10 billion balance sheet and $22 billion in annual originations. In Tom’s most recent role as President and COO of ARA Finance, he was responsible for the strategic development of the venture’s national multifamily lending platform, which provided services through ARA offices located across the country. 

    He previously served as Executive Vice President and head of New York City-based Cushman & Wakefield‘s national Debt & Equity Finance practice.

    Tom has been a member and/or served on a variety of industry boards, committees or councils including Real Estate Roundtable, NMHC, MBA, ICSC, CREFC, NAIOP, and ULI. Tom has a BS in Commerce degree from Rider University and an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
