    The State & Local Workshop kicks off with a welcome from MBA's Senior Vice President of Residential Policy and Member Services, Pete Mills, followed by remarks from MBA’s new President and CEO,  Robert Broeksmit, CMB.  Bob shares his vision for MBA and the important relationship MBA has -- and must continue to build -- with its many partner associations.     Robert (Bob) Broeksmit is President and CEO of the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA).  Bob is a senior finance executive and corporate officer with a 33-year career in the mortgage sector. He has directed all aspects of lending activities, including marketing, sales, operations, secondary marketing, loan servicing, and default management. He has also served as a mortgage underwriting expert testifying on many large, high-profile cases.

    Prior to joining MBA in 2018, Bob served as President and Chief Operating Officer with Treliant, heading the firm's mortgage litigation support practice and serving diverse financial services clientele including large banks, independent mortgage lenders, community banks, credit unions, and service providers to the mortgage industry. As a Washington-based financial services consultancy, Treliant's mortgage practice included strategic advisory for executive management and corporate boards; litigation defense, including file reviews, litigation strategy, expert reports, and expert testimony; CFPB examination preparation and implementation of mortgage regulations promulgated by the CFPB and other regulators; and operational aspects of mortgage banking, ranging from origination to servicing and loss mitigation.

    Before Treliant, Bob held senior leadership positions in the mortgage business, including fourteen years with Chevy Chase Bank (including after its purchase by Capital One), where he was Executive Vice President and President of its B.F. Saul Mortgage Company subsidiary. Bob also was a Vice President at Prudential Home Mortgage for seven years. He has overseen annual originations of $9 billion, a balance sheet of $10 billion in residential mortgages, and a servicing portfolio of $20 billion. He also held positions at Great Western Mortgage, Krupp Residential Mortgage, and The Money Store.

    Bob has served as the Chairman of the Mortgage Bankers Association's Residential Board of Governors and as a member of its Board of Directors. Firms under his leadership have garnered multiple awards for servicing operations excellence, including Freddie Mac's Tier One and Hall of Fame designations. He is a Certified Mortgage Banker (CMB) and a graduate of Yale Universit

    Pete Mills, Senior Vice President, Residential Policy & Member Engagement, Mortgage Bankers Association

    Pete Mills is Senior Vice President of Residential Policy and Member Services at the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA). In this position, he leads MBA’s residential policy team and also leads efforts to enhance MBA’s residential member engagement, retention and recruitment, as well as the association’s state and local advocacy programs. Mills is an experienced financial services industry executive with 30 years of expertise in public affairs, government relations, public policy and research, all in the housing and mortgage finance arena. Most recently, he served as Managing Director of the Community Mortgage Banking Project, a public policy organization that represents the interests of companies and coalitions involved in the housing and mortgage finance industries. During his career, Mills lead corporate public affairs for Countrywide Financial, managed trade association policy advocacy for the California Mortgage Bankers Association and the California Association of Realtors, and conducted housing policy research at the Federal Reserve Board. He has a BA in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley, where he graduated with distinction in 1982.

    Marianne Collins, Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer, Ohio Mortgage Bankers Association, Inc.

    Marianne Collins is the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer for the Ohio Mortgage Bankers Association. She also incorporated the New York Mortgage Bankers Association and is the association’s former Executive Director and COO. Marianne spent 35 years in the mortgage banking industry, her last position as Senior Vice President of Mortgage Lending for a Columbus area community bank. Prior to that, she was a partner in a regional mortgage banking company with 15 braches in 3 states. Marianne is a former member of the Fannie Mae National Advisory Council. She is past president of both the Columbus and Ohio Mortgage Bankers Associations, a former member of the MBA’s Board of Directors and Board of Governors, a former Chairman of MORPAC, and is involved in several MBA committees and working groups. Marianne is a winner of the MBA’s Burton C. Wood Legislative Service Award, a 2-time winner of the MBA’s Schmacher-Buldoc Award, and Mortgage Banking Magazine named her one of “20 Leading Industry Women” in the 2013 Centennial Issue.

    MBA's Associate Vice President of State Government Affairs and Industry Relations, William Kooper, provides welcoming remarks and moderates an open discussion, giving attendees an opportunity to discuss state and local association challenges faced across the country.

    William Kooper is Vice President of State Government Affairs and Industry Relations at the Mortgage Bankers Association and in that capacity leads MBA's advocacy efforts at the state and local level as well as MBA's engagement with mortgage banking associations across the country. William is responsible for the MBA State Legislative and Regulatory Committee, staffs the State Association Relations Committee and leads the State Relations Initiative -- MBA's program to partner with state associations to align business development, communications and advocacy interests.

    William joined MBA in January 2001 as Director of Government Affairs, and has had a variety of roles assisting MBA members. Before leading the state program, he was Associate Vice President of Legislative and Political Affairs where he directed MBA's nationwide grassroots advocacy program, the Mortgage Action Alliance, Inc. and the planning and execution of MBA's National Advocacy Conference. He also served as staff to MBA's political action committee, MORPAC.

    Prior to joining MBA, William was appointed by President Bill Clinton as Special Assistant and Briefing Coordinator to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Andrew Cuomo. At HUD, William prepared the Secretary's daily event briefings, wrote the Secretary's weekly report to the President and also made contributions to Presidential and Vice Presidential briefing documents.  William's other positions in and out of government have included Manager of Government Relations at HIP Health Plans in New York City, Senior Legislative Associate to the New York State Assembly Committee on Health, Research Analyst for the New York State Assembly's Council on Health Care Financing, and Confidential Assistant to New York Governor Mario Cuomo.

    Krystal Thomas is the Government Program Specialist in MBA’s Residential Policy and Member Engagement department. In her role, Krystal manages MBA’s State Relation Initiative (SRI) which seeks to align the interest of the national MBA and state associations around the country in three critical areas: advocacy, industry communications and business development. Additionally, Krystal supports MBA’s member engagement initiatives, such as the Wholesale Lenders Executive Forum, Diversity and Inclusion, and co-leads mPact, MBA’s platform for young professionals to build a strong network, deepen industry connections, and directly influence the future of our industry.

    Corey Galinsky, Vice President - Residential Mortgages, Severn Savings Bank

    Corey Galinsky has been in the residential mortgage business for over 10 years.  He currently serves as Vice President, leading the Residential Lending Division for Severn Bank in Annapolis, MD. 

    Mr. Galinsky is the current President of the Board of Governors for the Maryland Mortgage Bankers and Brokers Association, assisting in initiatives such as the Future Leaders Committee, as well as spearheading partnerships with multiple state universities.  He is also active in the community and serves as President of the Board of Directors for Seeds 4 Success, a nonprofit dedicated to mentoring and providing critical life skills to children from low income communities. 

    Corey is a graduate with honors of the Maryland Banking School, and was named as a Next Leader in Banking by the Maryland Bankers Association.  A 2003 graduate of Towson University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, he and his children currently live in Annapolis, MD.

    Geno J. Yoscovits, Director, State Government Affairs, Quicken Loans, Inc.

    Geno Yoscovits serves as a Director of State Government Affairs for the Southeast Region of the U.S. at Quicken Loans, the nation’s largest online home loan lender and largest retail mortgage lender. Currently based in Atlanta, Geno advocates for the company’s government agenda through state regulatory and legislative activities.  Geno joined Quicken Loans in October 2011.

    Prior to working with the State Government Relations Team, Geno has held various positions within Quicken Loans. He started his career as mortgage banker, which gave him a deep understanding of sales and the mortgage process. This equipped him to take his next role as a Senior Product Manager in Capital Markets. He managed the Veteran’s (VA) loan product line for Quicken Loans. While in this role, Geno helped move Quicken Loan’s to be the largest VA lender in the nation.

    Geno’s depth of knowledge on the VA product lead him into being considered an expert in the industry. His passion for helping Veterans and their families was instrumental in him creating the first ever industry wide VA working group and assisted in establishing the VA working group with the national MBA.

    Gaining passion for public policy during his VA work prepared Geno for his move to the State Government Affairs team. Since starting, he has quickly become involved in many southeastern State Mortgage Bankers Associations and other stakeholder legislative groups, which have been interictal in introducing, moving, or stopping legislation that effect’s our industry i.e. data privacy, remote online notarization, or licensing.

    There are many ways state and local groups are working together. In some cases that collaboration is part of a formal structure, and in other cases it is not. There is no “one size fits all” approach. This session will review different ways in which state and local groups engage with, and support each other.

    Alan Thorup has been the Executive Director of the Indiana Mortgage Bankers Association since February of 2008, the Kentucky Mortgage Bankers Association since January of 2016, and Louisville since February of 2017. He has been a volunteer board member of IMBA’s Greater Indianapolis Chapter for 4 years and IMBA’s State Board for 3 years, prior to becoming Executive Director.  Mr. Thorup has 24 years direct mortgage lending experience in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. He has personal mortgage loan originations of over 1,600 loans and has managed over $1.5B in mortgage loan production. He has BBA from Eastern Michigan University and MBA from Xavier University.  He has been a Fishers, Indiana resident since 2000, and has two grown children.  He has served as a Board Member with Habitat for Humanity of Indiana since 2009, and was elected President of the Board in 2016.  He is also a board member with mortgage industry education provider Diehl & Associates.

    Michael A. Olden, Vice President - Sales & Education, American Reporting Company

    At American Reporting Company, Mike’s primary responsibility is managing and developing new business with banks, credit unions, and mortgage bankers. Mike has worked in the mortgage banking industry since 1984 and at American Reporting Company since 1997.

    Mike also helps develop and deliver educational programs related to credit reporting and credit scoring for ARC clients; non-profit housing partners; and first time homebuyers. He is certified to teach continuing education to real estate agents in Washington and Oregon and has been a featured presenter to national audiences.

    Mike previously served on the Mortgage Bankers Association State & Local Advisory Council from 2005 to 2007; and was president of the Seattle Mortgage Bankers Association for the 2004/2005 term.  

    Robin Weyrens, Executive Director, Mortgage Bankers Association of the Carolinas, Inc.

    Robin, is the Executive Director for the Mortgage Bankers Association of the Carolinas, Inc for both North Carolina and South Carolina.  She replaced Rhonda Marcum in January 2018 who retired after 10 years as the Executive Director.

    She began her career in the Mortgage industry working at Trans Union in 1993 by providing credit related products along mortgage credit software for clients.  Robin, then continued working for other credit agencies such as INFO 1, which was purchased by LandAmerica until 2007.  In 2016, she returned and was employed with Credit Plus until joining MBAC.

    Deborah Dubois is the President of the MBA Opens Doors Foundation, a 501c3 charitable organization founded by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA).  As President, Deborah is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Foundation, as well as the development and execution of strategies that ensure its sustainability and growth. In collaboration with MBA's Chief Operating Officer and the Foundation's Board of Directors, Deborah plays a lead role in defining the Foundation's short-and long-term goals, including its hospital partnership strategy, grants program and revenue model.

    Previously, Deborah served as the Chief Development Officer for The Center for Public Integrity, a non-profit investigative journalism newsroom, where she led the fundraising and resource development operations, strengthening existing donor relationships and bringing new donors the organization's roster as a critical point in the organization's history.  Prior to the Center for Public Integrity, Deborah spent 10 years in senior executive positions, overseeing development operations, marketing, communications, and membership for social justice organizations, and 15 years in international, technology and consulting organizations.   

    Deborah holds an undergraduate degree from Cornell University and an MBA degree from The George Washington University.

    Debbie Sousa, Executive Director, Massachusetts Mortgage Bankers Association, Inc.

    Debbie Sousa has been the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Mortgage Bankers Association for almost 7 years. As Executive Director she oversees all activities of the Association including education; advocacy and legislative initiatives; compliance updates; membership and other activities of the MMBA. She previously served as the Director of Education for 5 years where she coordinated educational programs and events. Debbie is also the primary instructor for the NMLS pre-licensing and continuing education classes offered by the MMBA.

    Prior to joining the MMBA, she has been in the mortgage industry for 24 years – starting out processing at Bank of Boston, a mortgage insurance underwriter in the Midwest for Verex Mortgage Insurance, a mortgage training specialist for Credit Data of New England, a senior underwriter for BayBank Mortgage, a branch mortgage officer for Cambridge Savings Bank and Assistant Vice President of Mortgage Lending for Medford Savings Bank. In 2000 she joined Sherwood Mortgage Group as Vice President and gained experience in Mortgage Lending and Brokering.

    Debbie holds a seat on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Mortgage Bankers Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the MMBA. She is actively involved in many local committees and task forces. In 2011 she was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award by the MMBA. She is President of the Fields Corner Civic Association and also serves on the Board for the Ditson Street Senior Housing Center in Dorchester, MA.

    Debbie lives in Boston with her husband Steve of 20 years. She is the stepmother of three children and the grandmother of eight. She enjoys going to Maine on weekends, attending BC football games and even catching a Red Sox or a Patriots game once in a while!  

    Mindy Van Woerkom, AMP, Assistant Director, Mortgage Bankers Association

    Mindy Van Woerkom, AMP is the Assistant Director of Conference Programming at the Mortgage Bankers Association. In her role, she works on developing conference content with subject matter experts and industry experts. Mindy also manages MBA’s continuing education credits programs. Prior to joining MBA, Mindy  worked for various members of Congress in  the US Senate and House of Representatives in policy and scheduling roles. She received her Bachelors of Arts from Central College in Pella, Iowa and she achieved her Accredited Mortgage Professional designation in 2018.

    Trinity Lancione, Communications & Events Manager, Michigan Mortgage Lenders Association (MMLA)

    Trinity Lancione has been the Communications and Events Manager for the Michigan Mortgage Lenders Association (MMLA) since March 2017. Prior to working for the MMLA, Trinity was an active Association Member, holding a position on the State Board as well as volunteering on the Public Relations and Membership, and Banquet Committees. Trinity has been in the mortgage industry since January 2013 where she was a Marketing Coordinator at a Regional Boutique Mortgage Company. Trinity received her a Bachelor of Science from Northern Michigan University. When she’s not assisting the MMLA members, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two kids.

    Joanne K. Misuraca, Executive Director, Michigan Mortgage Lenders Association (MMLA)

    Joanne is the Executive Director of the Michigan Mortgage Lenders Association (MMLA), a position she has held for 20 years!  Joanne oversees her staff (1 part-time admin.) and consultants and works with all of the MMLA’s volunteers at the state and local levels.  In doing so, she also handles the daily operations of the association and ensures the MMLA member experience is the best it can be.  The MMLA has was established in 1929 and currently is 1593 members strong.  Joanne is a graduate of the school of hard knocks!

    Alan R. Fowler, President, Fowler Financial Education & Consulting, LLC

    Alan R. Fowler, CMB, is the Founder and President of Fowler Financial Education and Consulting, LLC, where he has provided NMLS education and general training and consulting services since 2009. Previously, Alan has been Executive Vice President of MBSI Lending and First Mortgage Company, LLC. For 31 Years, Alan was with Suburban Mortgage Company of New Mexico, holding positions in servicing, production and secondary marketing before serving a 12-year stint as President in 1999.

    Mr. Fowler is a 1989 graduate of MBA's School of Mortgage Banking and attained the Certified Mortgage Banker (CMB) designation in 1996. He has a BBA in Finance from the University of New Mexico.

    Mr. Fowler was the 2011 Chairman of the Certified Mortgage Bankers Society of America and is the Past President of the American Alliance for Loan Management. He was the 1992 and 2013 President and is a 20-year board member of the New Mexico Mortgage Lenders Association and serves as MBA's Ambassador for New Mexico. He is also a past member of the Fannie Mae Mortgage Bankers Advisory Board, Community Lending Roundtable and Secondary Market Advisory Committee, and has served on various MBA committees.

    He is a Master Faculty Fellow for MBA's School of Mortgage Banking, an original NMLS certified Education Provider and is a certified instructor of Realtor Continuing Education for several state Real Estate Commissions. Alan has provided over 2,000 hours of SAFE Act training to thousands of Loan Originators and has trained thousands of other mortgage, Real Estate and affiliated industry professionals in the U.S and around the world for national, regional, local and governmental entities. Mr. Fowler is the Chairman of the New Mexico Small Business Investment Corporation and is a past Chairman of the City of Albuquerque's Affordable Housing Committee and the Land Title Trust Fund.  He works with several community, tribal and non-profit organizations that provide affordable housing opportunities to under-served populations, acting as a trainer and speaker for home-buyer education programs.

    Of all Alan's activities and accomplishments, he is most proud of his wife, Heather, and his two children.

    Leah Marchbanks, Loan Officer, Citywide Home Loans/CHL Mortgage

    Leah Marchbanks has over 30 years in the mortgage industry with experience in origination, production management, underwriting, secondary marketing, loan delivery and compliance.  Currently with Citywide Home Loans, she originates, markets and assists in training for employees as well as realtor partners.  Becoming active in the Idaho Mortgage Lenders’ Association shortly after joining the industry, Leah has been a board member and President.   Leah has been on the planning committee for the Pacific Northwest Mortgage Lenders’ Conference the years that IMLA hosts the event since 1992.  She has been co-chair of the event since 2010, and is Chair of the conference this year.
