The Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) provides some of the most comprehensive and granular data on annual mortgage activity. Each year, MBA uses considerable resources to import, aggregate, analyze, QC and a list of originations by state and by purchaser channel.
Here is a summary of what is included with the purchase of this report:
 2011 Originations for State and US by Purchaser Channel
a. This includes both the number and dollar amount of originations for each state for total originations only, by state, by purchaser type. For each origination a reporting institution makes, they must disclose whether a majority interest in the loan was sold and to whom. All originations must be placed in one of the following categories:
i. Loan was not originated or was not sold in calendar year covered by register
ii. Fannie Mae (FNMA)
iii. Ginnie Mae (GNMA)
iv. Freddie Mac (FHLMC)
v. Farmer Mac (FAMC)
vi. Private securitization
vii. Commercial bank, savings bank or savings association
viii. Life insurance company, credit union, mortgage bank, or finance company
ix. Affiliate institution
x. Other type of purchaser
