GENERAL SESSION: Partnering with the GSEs in Today’s Market
The leaders of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac’s single-family businesses sit down with MBA’s 2025 Chair to discuss ways they are working with lenders to navigate today’s challenging lending environment. The session opens with an update from MBA’s President and CEO Bob Broeksmit with an update on recent developments in Washington and how they impact our industry.

Robert D. Broeksmit, CMB, is MBA’s President and Chief Executive Officer. He is a senior finance executive and corporate officer with over 35 years of experience in the mortgage sector. He has directed all aspects of lending activities, including marketing, sales, operations, secondary marketing, loan servicing, and default management. He has also served as a mortgage underwriting expert testifying on many large, high-profile cases. Prior to joining MBA, Broeksmit served as President and Chief Operating Officer with Treliant, heading the firm’s mortgage litigation support practice. He previously held senior leadership positions in the mortgage business, including 14 years with Chevy Chase Bank (including after its purchase by Capital One) and 7 years as Vice President at Prudential Home Mortgage. He has overseen annual originations of $9 billion, a balance sheet of $10 billion in residential mortgage, and a servicing portfolio of $20 billion. He is past Chairman of MBA’s Residential Board of Governors and a member of its Board of Directors.

Laura Escobar is the 2025 MBA Chair and President of Lennar Mortgage. A 30-year mortgage industry veteran, Escobar has held leadership positions with both bank-owned and independent mortgage companies overseeing all aspects of mortgage banking, including production, operations, compliance, accounting, and training. Her personal ground level experience in every facet of mortgage lending has enabled her to manage and fully integrate all of these departments within Lennar Mortgage. Escobar is highly engaged in the industry, serves on MBA’s Board of Directors, and was co-chair of MBA’s IMB Executive Council from 2020–2022. She is also a director of the MBA Opens Doors Foundation, which she has supported by successfully fundraising for the foundation’s work and leading Lennar in company campaigns. Beyond her industry work, she is also a licensed mental health counselor and devotes much of her time to working with underprivileged women.

Malloy Evans is Fannie Mae's Executive Vice President and Head of Single-Family, reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer. He leads the company's Single-Family business division, including the teams responsible for providing consistent and reliable liquidity to the single-family mortgage market, facilitating access to affordable homeownership, and managing the risk of the company’s $3.6 trillion mortgage loan portfolio. Evans has served in various roles during his tenure at Fannie Mae, most recently as Senior Vice President and Single-Family Chief Credit Officer, where he was responsible for first-line credit risk management from mortgage acquisition through disposition. He has also held other leadership roles overseeing risks across the Single-Family mortgage life cycle, as well as the company’s administration of the Treasury Department’s Making Home Affordable (MHA) program. Evans began his Fannie Mae career as an attorney in the company’s legal department, serving as the principal counsel supporting Fannie Mae's implementation of government initiatives under the MHA program and advising the business on the company's multi-class securitization program. Prior to joining Fannie Mae in 2004, Evans was a corporate associate at Hunton & Williams LLP, specializing in asset securitization and structured finance transactions. He has a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Davidson College and a Juris Doctor from Washington and Lee University School of Law.

Sonu Mittal is the executive vice president and head of the Freddie Mac Single-Family Acquisitions Division. He is responsible for seller engagement, credit, products and affordable mission goals, as well as the operations and technology functions that support these activities. He is a member of Freddie Mac’s senior operating committee. Mr. Mittal brings more than two decades of leadership experience in virtually every aspect of mortgage lending. He comes to Freddie Mac from Citizens, where he served as President of Home Mortgage, executive vice president of Home Lending and head of Retail Mortgage, among other key roles. Prior to Citizens, he spent 18 years in the Washington, D.C., area at Capital One and Chevy Chase Bank, working in mortgage production, consumer sales and other areas. He has extensive experience across sales, operations, capital markets, strategy, analytics, product management and technology. Mr. Mittal holds a bachelor’s degree in accountancy from the George Washington University School of Business.
