John Coleman

Partner Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, LLP

John Coleman is a partner at Orrick. He represents banks, nonbank financial institutions, corporations, and individuals in supervisory and enforcement matters initiated by government regulators, as well as in private civil litigation and internal investigations. He also counsels clients on compliance with consumer protection laws and supervision preparedness. Prior to joining Orrick, Coleman was a partner at Buckley LLP following 15 years in federal government service as a litigator and advisor to senior policymakers, most recently serving as Deputy General Counsel for Litigation and Oversight at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). He joined the CFPB soon after its creation in 2010 and was part of a core group of attorneys responsible for interpreting the agency’s authorities under the Consumer Financial Protection Act and establishing procedures for exercising those authorities. He was the first attorney to appear in court on behalf of the CFPB and was involved in every significant litigation matter prior to his departure. During his tenure, Coleman advised every CFPB director and senior officials on complex legal and policy matters and managed the Bureau’s litigation and appellate teams, including representation before congressional oversight bodies.
