General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer Better Mortgage

As General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, Paula Tuffin is responsible for providing legal advice to the C-suite and Board. In her role, she oversees corporate transactions, public company filings, contracts, litigation, employment matters, risk, privacy, the Compliance Management System, AML-BSA policy, SAR reporting and quality control. Under her leadership, her teams are responsible for maintaining all required company, branch and individual licenses necessary to operate the mortgage, insurance and real estate businesses, responding to regulatory examinations, all required regulatory reporting, and monitoring the compliance and legal functions in the UK businesses. Tuffin led Better’s Legal Team through the transition from a private to a public company over the course of two years. The work included managing the successful resolution of a Securities and Exchange Act investigation, obtaining regulatory approvals and championing the transition to a public company culture. She also serves as chair of the Management Ethics and Compliance Committee and Board Member of Better subsidiaries, BMTG Advisors, Ltd. Pvt. and Better Principal, LLC. Prior to joining Better, Tuffin was senior litigation counsel in the Enforcement Division of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau where she led the litigation team in the CFPB v. CashCall, Inc. et al. matter that successfully challenged the defendants’ Tribal lending arrangement. Earlier in her career she was a partner in the litigation and alternative dispute resolution group at Mayer Brown, LLP and an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Tuffin is a Williams College and Harvard Law School grad and was named to Forbes 50 over 50 Investment List, 2022 and among Crain’s New York Business Notable Diverse Leaders in Banking & Finance, March 2022.
