WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 28, 2024) – According to a set of commercial/multifamily real estate finance league tables prepared by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), the following firms were the top commercial/multifamily mortgage originators in 2023:

  • JLL
  • CBRE
  • JPMorgan Chase & Company
  • Newmark
  • Meridian Capital Group
  • Eastdil Secured
  • Walker & Dunlop
  • Berkadia
  • KeyBank
  • Wells Fargo

MBA’s report, Commercial Real Estate/Multifamily Finance Firms - Annual Origination Volumes, is the only one of its kind to present a comprehensive set of listings of 129 different commercial/multifamily mortgage originators, their 2023 volumes, and the different roles they play. The report presents origination volumes in more than 140 categories, including by role, by investor group, by property type, by financing structure type, and by the location of the originating office. 

By dollar volume, the top five originators for third parties in 2023 were:

  • JLL
  • CBRE
  • Newmark
  • Meridian Capital Group
  • Eastdil Secured

The top five lenders in 2023 were:

  • JPMorgan Chase & Company
  • Wells Fargo
  • Berkadia
  • Walker & Dunlop
  • PGIM Real Estate

Five different companies were at the top of the 8 lists reporting total originations by investor groups:

  • JPMorgan Chase & Company, Eastdil Secured, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Deutsche Bank Securities, Inc. were the top originators for commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) 
  • JLL, JPMorgan Chase & Company, PNC Real Estate, Meridian Capital Group, and KeyBank were the top originators for depositories
  • JLL, Apollo Global Management, PGIM Real Estate, Northwestern Mutual, and CBRE were the top originators for life insurance companies;
  • Walker & Dunlop, Berkadia, CBRE, Greystone, and KeyBank were the top originators for Fannie Mae
  • Berkadia, CBRE, Walker & Dunlop, JLL, and Newmark were the top originators for Freddie Mac
  • Berkadia, Lument, Greystone, Dwight Capital LLC, and Walker & Dunlop were the top originators for FHA/Ginnie Mae
  • JLL, Eastdil Secured, Newmark, CBRE, and Blackstone for investor-driven lenders
  • Cushman & Wakefield, Nuveen Real Estate, Q10 Capital LLC, Principal Real Estate Investors, and Barings were the top originators for pension funds
  • JLL, Walker & Dunlop, Newmark, Meridian Capital Group, and Bellwether Enterprise Real Estate Capital LLC were the top originators for the “other investors” category
