    Michael Flood, Senior Vice President of Commercial/Multifamily Policy and Member Engagement, Mortgage Bankers Association

    Mike Flood is the Senior Vice President of Commercial/Multifamily Policy and Member Engagement at the Mortgage Bankers Association. In this role, he is responsible for leading public policy and member engagement across all commercial real estate finance sectors including mortgage banking companies, bank portfolio lenders, life insurance companies, multifamily-focused lending institutions, affordable housing lenders, commercial mortgage-backed securities issuers, and investment management firms. Prior to joining MBA, Flood worked at the CRE Finance Council (CREFC), where he was Deputy Executive Director and head of the Washington, D.C., office. Prior to that, he served as the organization's Vice President, Head of Government Relations and Vice President of Policy and Economic Research. He has also held senior roles at the Structured Finance Industry Group, Association for Advanced Life Underwriting, Fannie Mae, and KPMG. Flood holds a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in marketing and finance from Georgetown University, and a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Illinois.

    Smriti Popenoe, President and Co-Chief Investment Officer, Dynex Capital, Inc.

    Smriti L. Popenoe, is the President and Co-Chief Investment Officer at Dynex Capital, a public mortgage REIT listed on the NYSE. She leads a team responsible for the day-to-day management of the Company’s investment portfolio including agency and non-agency RMBS, CMBS and whole loans, associated hedges in fixed income derivatives and financing arrangements. Ms. Popenoe’s 27 year career in finance and capital markets spans a broad range of financial institutions and experience across multiple business and market cycles. Prior to Dynex, she served as Executive Vice President, Chief Risk Officer at PHH Corporation, a leading provider of mortgage banking and fleet management outsourcing services. Before joining PHH, Ms. Popenoe was Senior Vice President, Balance Sheet Management, managing the $100+ billion investment portfolio at Wachovia Bank (now Wells Fargo) through the financial crisis in 2009. Ms. Popenoe also served as Senior Vice President, Investments of Sunset Financial Resources, a start-up REIT from 2003-2006. She spent nine years of the first part of her career with Freddie Mac, where she managed the investment portfolio of $400-billion fixed-rate MBS and whole loans.  Ms. Popenoe holds a B.S. in Chemistry and Environmental Science from St. Joseph's College in Bangalore, India (1990); a Masters-Level French Diploma from the Alliance Francaise (1990); and an M.B.A. from the University of Rochester (1993). She received her Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1997 (CFA). She is passionate about the environment, mentoring women, personal growth and lifelong learning.

    Jeffrey Weidell, CMB, Chief Executive Officer, Northmarq

    Jeffrey Weidell is CEO of NorthMarq, and previously president since 2013. He has been responsible for a number of the company’s initiatives, including an industry-leading associate producer program, the launch of the investment sales business, and expansion of the equity advisory business. Previously, Jeff was managing director of NorthMarq’s San Francisco office, and was an accomplished producer with Trowbridge, Kieselhorst & Company. Jeff holds a CMB designation. He serves on the MBA’s COMBOG and the Silicon Valley NAIOP Board. Jeff earned his BA in Economics from Columbia University and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

    Mark Fogel, Chief Executive Officer & President, ACRES Capital

    Mark Fogel founded ACRES Capital in 2012, leading the executive management team as the Chief Executive Officer and President. He is also Chief Executive Officer, President, and a Board member of ACRES Commercial Realty Corp (NYSE: ACR), a publicly traded commercial mortgage REIT. Mr. Fogel has 25 years of experience in commercial real estate finance, with a particular focus on providing developers and entrepreneurs with innovative debt and equity solutions. He holds a Bachelor and Science degree in Accounting from the University of Delaware and a Master of Science degree in Real Estate Investment and Development from New York University.

    Justin Wheeler, Chief Executive Officer, Berkadia

    Justin Wheeler is Chief Executive Officer and a member of Berkadia’s Management Committee. Prior to joining Berkadia, Mr. Wheeler was the Chief Operating Officer of Leucadia National Corporation and was appointed Vice President of Leucadia in 2006. As part of his prior role, Mr. Wheeler was responsible for M&A activities, operating portfolio performance, cash management and investment, as well as various administrative functions. Previously, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of American Investment Bank, N.A., a wholly owned subsidiary of Leucadia.

    Gary Otten, SVP, Managing Director & Head of Debt Strategies, MetLife Investment Management

    Gary Otten is head of MetLife Investment Management’s Real Estate Debt Strategies. Named to this position in 2013, Otten is responsible for leading MIM’s commercial mortgage loan platform.  Total assets managed in this strategy exceed $70 billion. Otten joined MetLife in 1996 and has served in various capacities within real estate in Atlanta and New Jersey, including mortgage production, mortgage workouts, managing loan servicing operations and mortgage information technology system development. Before joining MetLife, Otten spent five years in the commercial mortgage unit at Toyo Trust & Banking Co. Otten is an active member of the Mortgage Bankers Association and its Board of Directors.

    David Brickman, Chief Executive Officer, NewPoint Real Estate Capital

    David M. Brickman is the Chief Executive Officer of NewPoint Real Estate Capital and was recently named Executive Chairman of Meridian Capital Group, a leading commercial real estate services firm. He also serves as a Senior Advisor to Stone Point Capital, a leading private equity firm in the real estate and financial services arena. At the end of January, 2021 Brickman stepped down as Chief Executive Officer of Freddie Mac, one of the largest providers of mortgage financing in the U.S. Prior to that, he served as President and as a member of the Board of Directors. During his tenure he led the $2 trillion company through a period of significant growth, change, and disruption as the firm successfully navigated the challenges of the COVID crisis. Brickman spent most of his career at Freddie Mac leading and transforming the multifamily business,  presiding over a remarkable period of growth. Production rose from $16 billion in 2010 to almost $80 billion in 2018. He also established the company’s flagship K-Deal securitization program as one of the leading securitized products in the structured finance market. He drove significant innovation by expanding Freddie Mac’s products and offerings – particularly those serving the growing need for affordable and workforce housing. Brickman’s educational accomplishments include doctoral coursework for a Ph.D. in economics and real estate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He’s been a professorial lecturer at George Washington University, an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University and is a non-resident Fellow at the Urban Institute. He also holds a US patent for a unique mortgage-backed security structure.
